Weekend in Kelowna: A Local’s Guide to the Ultimate Okanagan Escape
Have you ever visited a place for a weekend and then found yourself dreaming about staying forever? That’s exactly what happened to us with Kelowna. After five years of living the amazing city life in Vancouver, we craved something quieter and closer to nature. So, four years ago, we listened to that persistent tug in our hearts and moved to Kelowna. What started as weekend getaways filled with wine tastings, morning paddles on glassy water, and spontaneous sunset hikes turned into everyday life. If you’re planning a weekend in Kelowna, whether as a romantic escape, a road trip stopover on the way to Banff, or a mini retreat from the daily grind then this blog is for you.
We’ve curated our favorite local experiences, hidden gems and practical tips from years of living here, so you can make the most of your own Okanagan escape. This isn’t just another destination guide – it’s written by locals who live, breathe and love Kelowna because this place has truly become home. Whether you’re road-tripping from Seattle to Banff (see our full guide here) and Kelowna is a stop along the way or you’re escaping for a long weekend, our detailed and personal recommendations will help you make the most of it.

When is the Best Time to Visit Kelowna?
One of the most common questions we get from friends is “When should I plan my weekend in Kelowna?” Honestly each season offers a unique vibe but Spring and Fall would be our top recommendation for your Kelowna Trip.
Spring (April–June) Vineyards Open
This is the season we fell in love with Kelowna when we visited for the first time from Vancouver. The valley comes alive with cherry blossoms, tulips, and vineyards starting to bud. Hiking trails dry out, and wineries open for tastings without the summer chaos. We often take scenic drives up to East Kelowna, windows down, with the scent of lilacs filling the car. The mornings are crisp, afternoons sunny, and evenings perfect for sipping rosé on a patio.
Summer (July–August) For Swimming
This is peak season in Kelowna and while it’s lively and full of energy, it’s honestly not our personal favorite. Yes, the lake is perfect for swimming, patios are packed and the sun doesn’t set until after 9 pm. But it also gets very hot, often reaching into the mid to high 30s°C (95–100°F). And with the dry heat comes a higher risk of wildfires which can affect air quality and even limit outdoor activities. That said, if you’re doing a bigger road trip from Vancouver to Banff, Kelowna still makes a great stopover. You can enjoy a quick wine tasting, paddle in the lake and grab a sunset dinner before continuing your journey into the mountains.
Fall (September–October) Harvest Season
After living for so many years in Kelowna, Fall is our absolute favorite time here. The Okanagan explodes in fall color, grapevines turn golden, apple orchards are heavy with fruit and the air smells like spice and grape harvest. It’s also the most romantic season here. We love slow drives through Naramata (check our top Naramata winery picks blog), cozy dinners at winery restaurants and scenic hikes at Scenic Canyon.
Winter (November–March) For Skiing
Winter in Kelowna is underrated. While the ski crowds head to Big White, the city itself is quiet and peaceful. We often take snowy walks by the lake, warm up with mulled wine at Mt. Boucherie or hit the Christmas markets in downtown. Bonus: accommodations are much more affordable.
Weather Tip: Summers range between 26–35°C (77–95°F). Winters hover around -5 to 2°C (28–36°F) but are surprisingly sunny.

Top Things to Do in Kelowna
Here’s what we always recommend to visiting friends and family. Each activity has been part of our real weekends, often repeated because we simply can’t get enough.
1. Wine Tasting in Kelowna and West Kelowna
There’s no Kelowna without wine. The views, the stories and the pairings is an experience. We created a full West Kelowna wine trail guide because we love it so much. Start at Mission Hill for beautiful grounds and grand estate, then head to CedarCreek for standout food and wine pairings and finally don’t miss sipping a glass of wine at Frind, the only beachside winery in North America.
2. Eat at a Winery Restaurant
In Kelowna, some of the best meals we’ve had ever have been at winery restaurants. The views, the local produce, and the Okanagan wines make for a match made in heaven. We wrote an entire guide about this too, read our blog on the Best Winery Restaurants in Kelowna. CedarCreek and Mt. Boucherie wineries are our top picks!
3. Enjoy Lakeside Parks
Pack a picnic and head to Gyro Beach or Bertram Creek Park. During summer, these spots are buzzing. But in spring or fall, you’ll find a quiet corner to yourself. We’ve spent anniversaries, lazy Sunday afternoons and even spontaneous packed dinners by the lake watching the sunset turn the water pink.
Personal Tip: Our favourite thing to do at these Lakeside Parks is to pack our favourite board game and a sandwich to enjoy while watching the sunset.
4. Hike with a View
Kelowna has some of the best scenic and easy hikes. We often start our weekends with a morning hike to Knox Mountain. On occasions where we are looking for a longer hike, we head to Myra Canyon Trestles. One hidden gem? Scenic Canyon Park with its unique geology and peaceful paths, it feels like a world away but is just a short drive from downtown. For more trail suggestions with easy routes and scenic views, check out our full hiking guide here Easy Hikes in Kelowna by a Local.
5. Explore the Brewery District
We’re not just about wine here. Kelowna’s craft beer scene is thriving, with new spots popping up all the time. Our go-tos are BNA Brewing, Red Bird, and Kettle River each offering something totally different. BNA has a retro bowling lane, great food, and a bustling indoor-outdoor space perfect for groups. Red Bird is our top pick, especially in summer, they have a spacious patio with live music, rotating food trucks, and a super chill community vibe. Kettle River feels more like a hidden gem, intimate and creative with small-batch brews that often surprise us.
6. Stroll the Cultural District
Downtown’s Cultural District is another favorite of ours anchored by the Rotary Centre for the Arts and Kelowna Art Gallery, it’s a walkable hub full of creativity. In summer, it comes alive with outdoor concerts, art markets, and performers. We often grab gelato from Parlour and stroll the waterfront area after dinner, soaking in the lively yet laid-back vibe. There’s something about sitting under string lights with a cold beer, music playing and locals chatting that captures the essence of Kelowna’s laid-back charm.
Personal Tip: My favourite concert is the Lord of the Rings Symphony from Candlelight Concerts played at the Laurel Packinghouse which is a multipurpose heritage building.

The Perfect 3-Day Kelowna Itinerary
Let’s break down a long weekend in Kelowna day by day. This itinerary is based on how we’d plan the perfect visit for our friends and blog readers – something we’ve done many times. Each activity is based on our real experiences and is carefully chosen to help you discover the essence of Kelowna’s charm.
Day 1: Wine, Views and the Golden Hour
Morning
Arrive in Kelowna and start the weekend with brunch at our favourite Diner Deluxe. We almost always order the huevos rancheros and lemon ricotta pancakes. The retro-inspired space and friendly vibe set the tone perfectly. If you’re driving in from Vancouver or stopping by during a road trip, this is a great spot to stretch your legs and fuel up.
Afternoon
Head across the bridge to West Kelowna, which we lovingly call the wine-lover’s playground. Make sure you have booked wine tastings and lunch restaurant in advance especially in the peak season,
- Mission Hill Family Estate: The first time we walked up those steps into the amphitheater courtyard, we felt like we were in Tuscany. Their guided tastings are rich in storytelling and their wines are just as elegant.
- Quails’ Gate: This is where you slow down for amazing views. You can do another tasting here or just stop by to soak in the lake views, we often skip the tasting and simply enjoy the scenery.
- Mt. Boucherie is our go-to for Lunch when we are in the West Kelowna area. The Modest Butcher restaurant serves fantastic food with again sweeping vineyard views.
Evening
End your day at Frind Estate Winery, the only beachfront winery in North America and one of our absolute favorite places to unwind. Have a chilled glass of rosé in hand, toes in the sand and the sun casting golden light over Okanagan Lake. Whether you’re sharing a bottle with friends at a picnic table or just soaking up the peaceful shoreline vibes, it’s a one-of-a-kind Kelowna moment you won’t forget. After dinner, walk down to Gellatly Bay for a peaceful evening lakeside stroll.
Day 2: Morning Trails, Lakeside Living and Brewery
Morning
Start your day with artisan coffee at Bright Jenny or Karat Chocolate if you don’t mind a sweet treat with your coffee, it’s our favorite for a reason. Their roasted-in-house beans, cozy backyard patio, and community vibe make it a perfect local hangout. Then head to Knox Mountain Park, just a few minutes away. We usually take the Apex Trail, it’s a moderate climb, but the sweeping views of Okanagan Lake and downtown Kelowna are worth every step. Bring water and your camera. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot deer grazing or bald eagles soaring overhead.
Afternoon
After the hike, grab lunch from Frankie We Salute You, one of our favorite plant-based restaurants in Kelowna. Their seasonal bowls and creative twists on comfort food are perfect for a refreshing midday refuel. Next, rent paddle boards from Lakefront Sports or Gyro Beach Board Shop and spend an hour or two floating peacefully on the Okanagan lake. When the water’s calm, it feels like glass and reflects the sky like a painting.
Optional detour: If you’re up for more wine instead of paddle boarding, visit Tantalus Vineyards nearby. Their tasting room has panoramic views and their Riesling is my favorite.
Evening
For a memorable evening, feel free dress up just a little and head to Home Block at CedarCreek Estate Winery. This place wowed us on our very first visit, it strikes that perfect balance between refined and relaxed. The food is seasonally inspired, the wine pairings are exceptional and the vineyard setting at dusk feels almost cinematic. After dinner, trade vineyard elegance for the laid-back charm of Red Bird Brewing. With its string-lit patio, live music, and rotating food trucks, it’s our favorite spot to wind down a day in Kelowna. Grab a pint, find a seat under the stars and soak in the easygoing energy that makes Red Bird feel like the heart of the community.
If you’re up for one more cocktail stop, head to Born to Shake. It’s one of our favorites, not just for the killer cocktails but also the fun, speakeasy vibe.
Day 3: Farm Loops, Cider Tastings and Canyon Trails
Morning
Sunday is for slowing down. Start with a drive through East Kelowna’s Farm Loop, one of our favorite summer Sunday traditions. You’ll pass orchards, boutique vineyards and roadside fruit stands. Stop at:
- The View Winery & Wards Cider: Charming, family-run and known for their Gewürztraminer and refreshing cider flights.
- Don-O-Ray Farms: If it’s cherry or peach season, stock up! Their fruit is as fresh as it gets. It’s our favourite spot for fruit shopping in the summer!
- Arndt Orchards: A fantastic U-pick spot during cherry season, there’s something incredibly satisfying and fun about picking your own fruit straight from the tree.
Afternoon
Now head to Myra Canyon Trestles. Even if you’re not a cyclist, walking a portion of this historic trail is worth it. The 18 wooden trestle bridges and 2 tunnels along the Kettle Valley Railway are awe-inspiring. We often bring visiting family here because it’s easy, scenic and surprisingly quiet in the shoulder seasons. Prefer something off-the-beaten path? Go for a serene walk in Scenic Canyon Regional Park instead. It feels wild, almost forgotten, but has some of the most interesting rock formations and forested trails in the region.
If you are interested in doing more scenic hikes, check out our full hiking guide here Easy Hikes in Kelowna by a Local.
Evening
Wrap up your weekend with dinner in Pandosy Village, a trendy, walkable neighborhood we often escape to for low-key evenings.
- The Fixx Café: Cozy and creative. Their seafood pasta is top-notch.
- Waterfront Wines: A little more upscale, ideal for a farewell toast to your Kelowna weekend. Their seasonal menus are always a treat.
After dinner, make your way downtown for one final treat. Skip dessert and head to Micro Bar & Bites, our absolute favorite cocktail spot in Kelowna. It’s small, stylish, and always buzzing with good energy. Their cocktails are inventive, beautifully balanced, and hands down the best in town.
Personal Tip: If you are looking to explore Kelowna Downtown and have dinner then you must try Cantina Del Centro (great mexican fusion food) or the Cactus Club Cafe at the Waterfront (their Zen sushi is all time fav!)

Where to Stay in Kelowna
One of the best parts about planning a weekend in Kelowna is that you can tailor your stay to your travel style, whether you’re after luxury, lakeside vibes, vineyard views, or a quiet residential escape. Over the past four years, we’ve stayed in or hosted family and friends across almost every part of the city, so here’s the local breakdown:
Downtown Kelowna
This is the heart of the action. You’ll be walking distance from Okanagan Lake, Waterfront Park, breweries, shopping, restaurants, and the Cultural District. If you’re only here for a weekend and don’t want to drive much, this is ideal.
- Vibe: Urban, walkable, vibrant
- Great for: Couples, solo travelers, foodies, event-goers
- Luxury Pick: The Royal Kelowna – rooftop infinity pool, lake views, and large suites. Great for a romantic escape.
- Budget Option: Hotel Zed – funky, retro, and fun. We recommend this one to younger couples or friends visiting on a budget.
Lower Mission
This is where we go when we want to relax. It’s residential but not too far from restaurants and amenities. You’re close to Gyro Beach, H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre (if traveling with kids) and great eateries.
- Vibe: Laid-back, beachy, residential
- Great for: Families, longer stays, beach lovers
- Luxury Pick: Eldorado Resort – classic Kelowna charm with lake access, marina, and waterfront dining.
- Budget Option: Siesta Suites – comfortable, well-located, and surprisingly affordable for the area.
West Kelowna
Vineyard country with rolling hills, lake views, and wine-themed B&Bs. While it’s a bit more car-dependent, we love this side for a peaceful escape. If your trip is focused on wine tasting, you’ll love waking up right in the middle of the action.
- Vibe: Scenic, rustic-luxe, quiet
- Great for: Wine lovers, couples, retreat-style weekends
- Luxury Pick: The Cove Lakeside Resort – spacious suites, lakefront, perfect for a luxe but low-key weekend.
- Budget Option: Casa Loma Lakeshore Resort – family-friendly and walkable to the lake.
No matter your budget or travel style, there’s a stay in Kelowna that will make your weekend feel like a mini retreat. And if you’re visiting during the peak season (July-August), be sure to book well in advance – hotels/Airbnb listings get snapped up fast and they are expensive!
Our Pick: If it’s your first time, go with Downtown or Lower Mission. West Kelowna is a dream for repeat visitors who want wine on their doorstep.
